Thank goodness for the rain … natural timber movement in the Aussie environment

Have you noticed growing gaps in your timber floors or some cracks appearing in your dining table? Recently, South East Queensland has experienced an extended period without rain and this has highlighted the impact of the environment on the timber within our homes.

Wood is a natural material and the cell structure, similar to our skin, can take on and release moisture it breathes. As the temperature and humidity levels in your home change throughout the seasons, timber expands and contracts as the moisture content in the wood changes.

Periods of extreme dryness can lead timber to shrink. Through a lack of moisture, splits and cracks may occur along the grain and contraction across the grain. In contrast, high humidity can lead to the timber to expand and swell.

If you are noticing changes in your furniture, don’t panic. Our furniture is built to allow for this natural movement. As the weather changes, this movement will settle.

You can also take some simple steps from the beginning to reduce possible movement in your timber furniture. This is centred around the placement of your furniture. A controlled environment is best. Furniture should be placed away from direct sunlight, heaters and air conditioners. These factors can lead to discolouration, the breakdown of finishes and cause movement and damage within your furniture. Manufacturers warranties do not cover against environmental issues like the ones listed above.

Finishes can decrease the level of movement, but are unable to completely prevent it from occurring. We use Osmo on all of our furniture (unless specified). Osmo finishes are based on natural oils and waxes. The oil penetrates into the wood surface, protecting the wood from deep within. The waxes form an elastic, micro porous surface which protects the wood from moisture and abrasion. The wood remains naturally beautiful, protected and durable.

Finally, ongoing maintenance of timber furniture is essential for longevity. Timber furniture needs nourishment. We recommend that Osmo maintenance products be used regularly to prevent deterioration. It is recommended to apply the liquid wax cleaner spray to a high traffic surfaces such as benchtops and dining tables every three months. Every six months should suffice for low traffic surfaces such as entertainment units. However, if your piece of furniture appears dull, an application of oil would be beneficial. Osmo maintenance products can be purchased here. In addition, our full furniture care guide can be found here.
